EVERTON 1 - 2 LATICS - AGGY DOO! Aghahowa and Cwyka on the mark in comfortable victory
EVERTON 1
Agard 35
LATICS 2
Aghahowa 22
Cwyka 67
Julius Aghahowa and Tomasz Cwyka were the scorers as Keith Bertschin's Latics came away from Widnes Halton Stadium with a highly creditable win against Everton.
There were some major pluses for Latics, Aghahowa's goal, 90 minutes for Ryan Taylor and a faultless defensive display from a back four featuring Titus Bramble and Maynor Figueroa chief among them.
Aghahowa cleverly dispossessed Anthony Gardner, on loan at Goodison from Tottenham, midway through the first half, and ran clear to score at the second attempt. Everton equalised before the break with a shot from distance from Kieran Agard; just about their only significant attack of the night.
Latics rallied well after the break and Tomasz Cwyka cut in from the left on 67 minutes and unleashed a shot that wriggled in at the near post.
Bramble and Figueroa were very solid in the heart of defence and Latics had chances to score again, notably from a trademark Ryan Taylor free-kick that came rebounding off the woodwork. Taylor was brought off just before the end.
