Emile Heskey got his hundredth goal in English football but Bolton's Iranian midfielder Andranik Temourian ruined Wigan's Easter with his second half brace that ensured Bolton's first victory over Latics for fifteen years.
It was however, a bright start for Latics who took the lead in this scrappy encounter after the ball was scrambled over the line just on the half-hour mark after Paul Scharner burst into the area, and his low cross was diverted by Emile Heskey. Despite the best efforts of Bolton defender Nicky Hunt to clear the danger, he couldn't stop Heskey netting his hundredth goal in English football.
There was a debatable penalty appeal for the goalscorer as he was released by Leighton Baines' long pass, but before the striker could pull the trigger in the penalty area, he was shoulder barged by Abdoulaye Meite. However, referee Uriah Rennie deemed a corner to Latics sufficient rather than pointing to the spot.
However, Wanderers levelled the scores just minutes before the break. John Filan, making his 200th appearance for Latics, made a superb point blank save from El-Hadji Diouf before Senegalese strikers pass made it easy for the Frenchman to tap home.
But it got worse for Latics as Wanderers took the lead with just twenty three minutes remaining as they sliced through the Latics defence with a slick move. Diouf slotted the ball to Iranian midfielder Andranik Teymourian who easily slotted the ball underneath Filan.
The Iranian midfielder hurt Latics again five minutes later when when he met Kevin Davis' cross with a powerful downward header which sneaked in at the near post despite Filan's efforts to make the save.
Between Teymourian's goals, Latics could have had an equaliser in the 70th minute when Heskey placed the ball at the feet of substitute Henri Camara, who had earlier replaced Caleb Folan. The Senegalese striker saw his shot rebounded off a Wanderers defender before it was hastily cleared by Meite.
But the situation could have been a lot different for Latics when after just four minutes of play Lee McCulloch went tantalisingly close to opening the scoring when he volleyed wide from a Ryan Taylor corner.
And after Bolton had their 3-1 lead, the Scottish international had a brilliant chance to reduce Wigan's deficit with a superb shot from twenty-five yards, but it cannoned off the bar.
At the other end of the pitch, Filan was called into another brilliant double save in first half injury time as he parried Andranik Taymouran's long range shot, but only as far as Diouf whose rebound was brilliantly saved by the Australian goalkeeper.
