Josip Skoko commits to another year at the club

Wigan Athletic have confirmed that Australian international Josip Skoko has committed himself to staying at the JJB Stadium for another season.

The deal is subject to him being granted a work permit, which the club is currently in the process of applying for, and the 31 year-old will sign once this paperwork is completed.

Manager Chris Hutchings said he was delighted that Skoko has decided his immediate future lies at Wigan.

"I think Skokes proved himself to be a really valuable member of the team last season," said Hutchings, "he's a quality player, who's equally strong on either foot, and is an excellent passer of the ball.

"He came in last year and did really well. He offers something different for us in the midfield, which of course is an area where traditionally, competition is highest.

"We have some real quality in that area already but competition for places is the key at every club and I want Skokes to be in there fighting for his place alongside all the other players here."

Hutchings said he was particularly pleased that Skoko had decided to stay because there were a number of clubs who had shown an interest in the Socceroo.

"Skokes had offers from elsewhere," said Hutchings, "and I know that he was tempted to try his hand at another club. But he said he felt very settled at Wigan and that he would always be treated fairly here, which pleased me a lot. I'm delighted he has chosen to stay with us, really delighted."
