Paul Scharner and Chris Kirkland express their delight at helping Wigan keep their Premier League place.

Both players played their part in a 2-0 win at Aston Villa which also helped the club notch up another clean sheet as Antonio Valencia netted both goals within eleven second half minutes.

Scharner told Wigan World subscribers, "It was an unbelievable game and we picked up the three points that we needed. Now we are sure we are safe.

"I have to say congratulations to Antonio for his two goals and they were very important and the whole team worked very hard. We put pressure on Villa for the first fifteen minutes, and that's when we scored, and I think that was when they broke down.

"We were a little nervous at first but as the game went on, we got better and in the second half we became more confident, got more possession and Villa did not get too many chances."

Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was equally ecstatic at Latics finally securing their top flight status, and hopes that the team will aim higher in the future.

The England international said, "Everyone is mentally shattered but we are all delighted too. After missing out on consolidating safety last week we have picked ourselves up and to come and win 2-0 against a team chasing a European place is fantastic, and I think we fully deserved it.

"We have been strong and resilient and we have fought anybody we've played, and that is the way it is in this league. We had a bad start and we were up against but it is a great achievement for Wigan to finish they way we have done. Hopefully we have got the makings of a strong team for the future."

The shot stopper praised Valencia on his brace of goals but is aware of transfer speculation surrounding the Ecuadorian.

He continued, "He deserved the goal, he is some player and hopefully we can keep him. Wilson [Palacios] is as well. Since he arrived in January he has made such a big impact."

But the goalkeeper was also adamant that they will give title chasing Manchester United a hard game despite the fact Latics can now afford to lose.

"We want to do well against Manchester United, we want to pit our wits against them and we will give it a good go on Sunday as it is only fair for the league."
